Creative Arts Therapy

Humankind has used expressive and creative arts for communication, self-expression, and healing for thousands of years. Creative and expressive arts therapy is underpinned by the concept that creative expression can foster healing and well-being. Creative and expressive arts therapy integrates psychotherapeutic approaches with creative processes to aid participant/ client to express, interpret and resolve emotions, feelings and thoughts.

Sensorimotor Creative

Arts Therapy

Sensorimotor creative arts therapy (SCART) centralises the wisdom of the body. Grounded in approaches from somatic psychotherapy and integrating the mediums of paint, pastels, clay, textiles, collage, guided imagery, and movement allowing access to, expression of, and the potential for healing, bringing a deeper sense of self. Guided drawing and Clay Field Therapy are two SCART approaches that are available.

Clay Field Therapy

Clay Field therapy can be beneficial in therapy for recovery from, childhood experiences of abuse, and trauma as well as states relating to anxiety, depression and stress. Increasingly working with the wisdom of the body or the bottom-up approach is considered the “gold standard”* in resolving trauma. Clay Field Therapy is an intricate interaction between human neurobiology, haptic perception, and expressions of lived experiences. German art therapist Professor Heinz Deuser developed this approach over the past 50 years.

Please note: It is unusual to have a clay field session as the first session of therapy. Clay Field sessions are offered in response to the unique need of each individual. Clay Field Therapy sessions are offered after initial consultations and conversations with Liz or Jean.

What happens in a SCART session?

Like other therapeutic approaches how you feel about the process and about working with Liz or Jean is important.  This initial session may take longer than subsequent sessions for this reason.  Pastels, drawing, modeling with plasticine or clay may be some of the resources that would be drawn upon at this first appointment.  IMPORTANTLY  what is offered in any creative arts therapy session is just that an offering, a suggestion, and you as the client decide whether you would be comfortable with that medium.  There will be some talking, could be some drawing, some painting, some clay work, use of plasticine or some collage, some use of movement and rhythm, use of writing and journalling. And within the process, you may be drawn to explore what you are noticing that is present in your interior landscape. This could be called knowing about your felt sense.  Not all of these mediums would be used in one or even any session nor would they be suitable for everyone. Importantly NO ART EXPERIENCE is required. The aim is that you will learn to trust that how you express yourself is unique to you and therefore is very much an expression of your interior landscape.

Liz and Jean also offer individual sessions in talking therapy  “counselling”. Liz is also a qualified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. Creative Arts Therapy can be taken as an adjunct to counselling and psychotherapy or as its own therapeutic process.

As a professional therapist, notes are made either during the session or at the conclusion of the session which are kept as a confidential and secure record of our time together.  Taking notes assists us in the process of your sessions.  Please ask Liz or Jean any questions about this if you have any concerns.    You will be asked to sign a consent form at the commencement of the therapeutic relationship.
